With echoes of Fantastic Planet and Yellow Submarine, this richly-drawn hallucinatory animated thriller features extraordinary kaleidoscopic images and unfolds in a fantastical kind of dream logic. Starring the voice talents of Lake Bell, Zoe Kazan, Michael Cera, Peter Stormare, Thomas Jay Ryan, and Grace Zabriskie, the story innocently begins with a couple romping in the woods, seeking intimacy and a good high. When they inadvertently stumble on a park of fantasy creatures — dragons, griffins, winged horses and unicorns abound — the two lovers discover a refuge for these endangered and misunderstood mythical creatures hailing from the folklores and legends of a hundred different cultures that the wider world either does not believe in, fears, or wants to exploit. A hypnotically trippy vision, CRYPTOZOO’s animation is both gorgeously vivid and astonishingly fluid, swirling together a panoply of styles, from watercolor to marker scratches, as it literalizes imagination through animation. This vibrant and wondrous animated feature for adults will take you on a sublime journey that explores the complex relationship between idealism, utopian visions, the call to duty, and the alluring power of controlling dreams.
