A mind-melting journey through the doors of perception made up of a surreal Mexican landscape laden with dead bunnies and burros, snarling hippie chicks, buckets of blood, and guru-gunslingers, Alejandro Jodorowsky’s midnight classic EL TOPO is the most controversial acid head trip ever made.

Set in the furthest reaches of the movie western, the cosmic tale follows a lone master gunfighter traveling across a psychedelic desert on a quest to battle four sinister, sharp-shooting rivals, while confronting his own spiritual anguish and existential dread. From its John Lennon-approved, nearly fanatical following in the ’70s during midnight screenings to its various bootlegged incarnations, EL TOPO remains an enduring cult film experience now celebrating its 55th anniversary.
