A mother’s idyllic country life is threatened when her newly adopted daughter turns from shy and charming to menacing and dangerous in this shocking thriller. Wiebke (German acting treasure Nina Hoss) is a horse trainer and adoptive mother to Nicolina. The two share a strong bond and live a peaceful life in the countryside. Together they plan on expanding their family to include Raya and travel to the young girl’s native country to bring her home. Shortly after that trip, Wiebke learns that her new daughter suffers from a strange disorder and cannot build emotional connections to those around her — further, she begins exhibiting shocking behavior and grows increasingly violent, claiming her actions are motivated by the provocation of a dark spirit. Like with The Exorcist, the mother and daughter are bound together both by love and something possibly evil. The result is a daring, jarring horror drama about a mother pushed to the limits to save her child, with unexpected results.
